Let's Talk: Statement Necklaces (Pt. 2)

Today I wanted to share with you my tips on purchasing statement necklaces. But before I do, be sure to check out last week's post Let's Talk: Statement Necklaces (Part 1).

Here are my tips for purchasing statement necklaces:

1.) Feel the Weight: In order to determine this, you must try the necklace on. A statement necklace should not be too heavy. If it is too heavy, you may not be able to wear it the entire day. You want it to be just right!

2.) Know Your Brands: When it comes to fashion jewelry, it's about trial and error. I have purchased necklaces before that were on the pricier side, only to have them tarnish within a few months. On the flip side, I have purchased cheaper statement necklaces that have lasted years and are still in mint condition. Here is a small list of places I like to purchase statement necklaces from: Topshop, Anne Klein, Cookie Lee, Betsey Johnson, Lucky Brand, BCBG. These are just brands that I love, but there are so many other great brands.

3.) Price: Sometimes what you pay for is what you get. I have learned this lesson (many times) the hard way. It's great to save money and get the best deals, but sometimes it doesn't always result in good quality. I don't like to spend a lot on fashion jewelry, but sometimes it is better to invest a little more in something that is of good quality, especially if you plan on wearing it often.

4.) Think About Versatility: Be sure to think about how many outfits you could wear it with. You should buy a necklace that matches what you already have in your closet, instead having to buy outfits to match the necklace.

5.) Check It: As always, before you buy the necklace, it's always a good idea to make sure no parts are broken and that all the rhinestones, pearls, etc. are in place.

Closet Raid: Mom's Closet

Fashion inspiration can come from anywhere and everywhere, including other people's closets. Looking through other people's closets (with their permission, of course) is a great way to experiment with different styles without costing you a penny. For my first closet raid, I challenged myself to find at least three pieces in my mom's closet and style them.

The first piece I chose is by far my favorite piece in her closet- this Free People over-sized blouse. If I were to describe my mother's style it would be "boho-chic" because she loves loose, "flowy" silhouettes, embroidery, and floral prints. Since it's a free-flowing piece, I decided to pair it with a tight, high-waisted jean short on the bottom.

This next piece is a sheer cobalt blue blouse by Vince Camuto. I absolutely adore the color and the cut. Since my mom and I are not the same size, it was a bit big for me. In order to make it wearable, I gathered the extra fabric on the bottom and tucked it in the back of my white jeans and threw on a blazer to give me a more sleek silhouette.

This is my second favorite piece in my mom's closet. This casual Rachel by Rachel Roy top is sheer with holes all over it. Since I am short, it's very long on me. Therefore, I decided to slip on a burgundy velvet skater skirt over the top to add color and help define my waist.

Lastly, I chose a beige cargo jacket, which was shoved in the back of her closet. My mom never wears this jacket, but I thought it would be such a shame not to feature it on my blog. In order to make it fit me, I threw it over an off white slip dress, rolled up the sleeves and added a belt. *(Fashion Tip: Layering a belt over any over-sized clothing helps to define your waist and helps to pull the outfit together.)
